Understanding Electrical Systems

Electricity is all around us: in lights, fans, computers, and even your phone!
But how does it actually flow?
Let’s break it down.

What is an Electrical System?

An electrical system is made up of different parts that work together to let electricity flow.

The simplest system is called an electric circuit.
A circuit usually has:

  • Battery (Energy source): Gives power.
  • Wires: Carry the electricity.
  • Bulb (or device): Uses the electricity.
  • Switch: Turns the electricity on or off.

Open vs Closed Circuit

For electricity to flow, the circuit must be closed (no gaps).

  • Closed Circuit: Electricity flows → Bulb lights up
  • Open Circuit: Electricity cannot flow → Bulb stays off

Think of it like water in a hose. If the hose is cut, the water cannot reach the end.

Conductors and Insulators

Electricity needs a path to travel.

  • Conductors: Materials that allow electricity to pass through.
    • Examples: Metals like copper, aluminium.
  • Insulators: Materials that block electricity.
    • Examples: Rubber, plastic, wood.

That’s why wires are covered in plastic – to keep us safe!

Series vs Parallel Circuits

When more bulbs are added, the way they are connected matters.

  • Series Circuit: Bulbs are connected one after another in a single loop.
    • If one bulb blows, the whole circuit stops working.
  • Parallel Circuit: Bulbs are connected in separate loops.
    • If one bulb blows, the others can still light up.
Series vs Parallel Circuits

Conserving Electricity

Electricity is useful, but it must be used wisely. Always:
✔ Switch off lights when not in use
✔ Avoid overloading sockets
✔ Handle electrical devices safely

Quick Recap

  • An electrical system has batteries, wires, bulbs, and switches.
  • A closed circuit lets electricity flow.
  • Conductors let electricity pass, insulators block it.
  • Circuits can be series (all connected) or parallel (separate loops).
  • Use electricity safely and wisely!
