The Respiratory System – Breathing in Air
Air is everywhere around us! It’s made up of several gases — mainly nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water vapour. Out of all these gases, oxygen is the most important for us. Our body needs oxygen to release energy from the food we eat.

Here’s how breathing works:
- Nose – takes in air from the surroundings.
- Windpipe (trachea) – acts like a passageway that carries the air down.
- Lungs – take in oxygen from the air and remove carbon dioxide when we breathe out.
So each time you breathe in, you’re giving your body the oxygen it needs to stay alive and active!
The Circulatory System – Pumping Blood
Once oxygen enters your lungs, it’s passed into your blood. The heart acts as a strong pump that sends this oxygen-rich blood through blood vessels to every part of your body.
At the same time, the blood collects carbon dioxide (a waste gas) from the body and carries it back to the lungs, where it’s breathed out.

Let’s break it down simply:
- Heart → The pump that keeps blood moving.
- Blood → The carrier that transports oxygen and food.
- Blood vessels → The tubes that carry blood all around your body.
Working Together

The respiratory and circulatory systems work hand in hand — just like teammates!
- The respiratory system brings oxygen into the body.
- The circulatory system delivers that oxygen (and food) to all body parts.
- The digestive system breaks down food into nutrients, which are also carried by the blood.
Together, these systems make sure your body has the energy to move, grow, and stay healthy.
Comparing with Plants and Fish

Every living thing needs oxygen to stay alive — but not all breathe the same way!
- Plants: Take in oxygen and give out carbon dioxide through tiny openings called stomata. They also have tubes that carry food and water inside them.
- Fish: Take in oxygen from water and give out carbon dioxide through gills.
- Humans: Take in oxygen from air and give out carbon dioxide through lungs. Our blood vessels transport oxygen, food, and waste gases around the body.
So even though the systems are different, the goal is the same — to get oxygen in and remove carbon dioxide out!
