Plant System – P4 Science Lesson
Look around you — plants are everywhere!
Plants may look simple, but they have important parts that work together to help them survive and grow.
These parts form what we call the plant system.
Let’s explore the plant system in a clear and easy way.
What Is a Plant System?
A plant system is made up of different plant parts that work together to keep the plant alive.
Even though plants cannot move like animals, they still need:
- Water
- Food
- Support
To get these, plants use three main parts:
- Leaf
- Stem
- Root

Leaf – Making Food for the Plant
The leaf is one of the most important parts of a plant.
Leaves are usually green and flat.
What does the leaf do?
- Makes food for the plant
- Uses sunlight, air, and water to make food
- Helps the plant grow and stay healthy
You can think of the leaf as the kitchen of the plant, where food is made every day.
Try This!
Look at the leaves around your home or school.
Are they all the same shape and size?

Stem – Supporting the Plant
The stem helps the plant stay upright.
What does the stem do?
- Supports the plant and keeps it standing
- Holds up leaves, flowers, and fruits
- Allows water and food to move around the plant
(You will learn more about tubes in Primary 5!)
Without a stem, a plant would fall over and not receive enough sunlight.
Real-Life Example
Have you noticed plants bending towards sunlight?
The stem helps position the leaves to get more light.

Root – Holding and Helping the Plant
The root grows underground and is usually not seen.
What does the root do?
- Holds the plant firmly in the soil
- Absorbs water from the soil
- Helps the plant stay alive
Roots act like an anchor, preventing the plant from being blown away by strong winds.

How the Plant System Works Together
All parts of the plant system work as a team:
- Roots absorb water
- Stems support the plant
- Leaves make food
If one part does not work well, the plant may not survive.
Plants are living things, just like us — they need care too.
Caring for Plants
Plants are important to our environment.
We should:
- Water plants regularly
- Avoid stepping on them
- Do not pluck leaves unnecessarily
Caring for plants shows responsibility and respect for living things.

Let’s Summarise
- Plants have three main parts: leaf, stem, and root
- Each part has a specific function
- Leaves make food
- Stems support the plant
- Roots absorb water and hold the plant firmly
