Life Cycle of Flowering Plants (P3 Lesson and Worksheet)
Plants are living things, just like humans and animals.
All living things grow and change over time.
The series of changes from the beginning to the end of life is called a life cycle.
Different plants may have different life cycles, but in Primary 3 Science, we focus on the life cycle of flowering plants.
In this lesson, you will learn the 3 main stages in the life cycle of a flowering plant.

What Is a Life Cycle?
A life cycle is the process where a living thing:
✔ begins its life
✔ grows and develops
✔ becomes an adult
✔ produces young
✔ and the cycle repeats again
This is how living things continue their kind.
The Life Cycle of a Flowering Plant
A flowering plant goes through three main stages:
Seed → Young Plant → Adult Plant
Stage 1: Seed
The life cycle of a flowering plant begins with a seed.
What is a seed?
A seed is a small object that can grow into a new plant.
Important facts about seeds:
- Seeds come in many shapes and sizes
- Some seeds are found inside fruits
- Seeds may look dry or inactive, but they are still living things
When the conditions are right, the seed will begin to grow.

Stage 2: Young Plant
When a seed begins to grow, it becomes a young plant.
What happens during this stage?
- Roots grow into the soil to absorb water
- A stem grows upwards
- Leaves appear
Once leaves appear, they help the plant make food.
What does a young plant need to grow well?
✔ Water
✔ Air
✔ Sunlight
At this stage, the plant is still small and fragile.

Stage 3: Adult Plant
As the young plant continues to grow, it becomes an adult plant.
What can an adult plant do?
- It is fully grown
- It may produce flowers
- It can produce seeds
When the adult plant produces new seeds, the life cycle starts again.

The Life Cycle Continues
The life cycle of a flowering plant follows this order:
🌱 Seed → Young Plant → Adult Plant → Seed
This cycle can repeat again and again.

Different plants may take different amounts of time to grow, depending on:
- The type of plant
- The amount of sunlight and water
- The environment
Observing Plant Life Cycles
We can learn about plants by observing them.
Try this simple activity:
🌿 Mini Science Activity
- Plant a bean seed in cotton wool or soil
- Water it daily
- Observe changes every day
- Record the growth of roots, stems, and leaves
This helps you see the life cycle happening in real life.

Caring for Plants
Plants are living things, so they need care.
We should:
- Water plants regularly
- Give them enough sunlight
- Avoid damaging leaves, stems, and roots
- Protect plants in nature
Caring for plants shows responsibility and care for the environment.
Let’s Summarise
- All plants have a life cycle
- Flowering plants go through 3 main stages:
✔ Seed
✔ Young plant
✔ Adult plant - Adult plants can produce seeds, and the life cycle continues
- Different plants may have different life cycles
- Plants should be cared for and respected
