Digestive System for Primary Students
The Journey of Your Food: The Digestive System
Have you ever wondered what happens to the food you eat?
We know that food goes into our mouth and eventually leaves our body as waste. But what happens in between?
Let’s explore the digestive system!
Why do we need a Digestive System?
Our body cannot use a whole apple for energy. The digestive system has two main jobs:
- Break down food into simpler substances that the body can absorb.
- Absorb nutrients into the bloodstream to give us energy and help us grow.
- Removes waste materials
Without it, our body cannot function properly.

🛠️ The 5 Main Stops of the Digestive System
1. The Mouth
Digestion starts here!
- Teeth: Chew the food into smaller pieces. This increases the surface area for saliva (digestive juices) to work faster.
- Saliva: Softens the food and contains digestive juices to start breaking down the food.

2. The Gullet
Think of this as a “food pipe.” After swallowing, food moves through the gullet (also called the oesophagus).
- It connects the mouth to the stomach.
- No digestion happens here. The muscles simply push the food down.

3. The Stomach
A muscular bag that acts like a blender. The stomach is like a mixing machine.
- Food is mixed with more digestive juices.
- The food is broken down into a thick, soupy liquid.

4. The Small Intestine (Absorbing Nutrients)
This is the most important stop! The small intestine is actually very long – about 6 to 7 metres!
- Digestion is completed here.
- Nutrients are finally small enough to pass through the walls of the small intestine and enter the bloodstream.
- The blood then carries these nutrients to all parts of the body.

5. The Large Intestine (Removing Waste)
Not everything we eat can be digested. The large intestine is shorter but wider than the small intestine.
- No digestion occurs here.
- Its main job is to absorb water and mineral salts from the undigested food.
- The remaining solid waste (smelly stuff!) moves to the rectum and leaves the body through the anus.

⚠️ Exam Traps: Don’t Get Tricked!
| Common Myth | The Science Truth (For Exams) |
| Digestion starts in the stomach. | False. It starts in the Mouth. |
| The Gullet digests food. | False. It is just a passage. No digestion occurs. |
| Digestion ends in the large Intestine. | False. Digestion is completed in the Small Intestine. |
| The large Intestine absorbs nutrients. | False. It only absorbs water and mineral salts. |
💡 Summary for Parents & Students
To remember the flow, just follow the “Food Path”: Mouth → Gullet → Stomach → Small Intestine → Large Intestine → Anus
Pro-Tip: If a question asks why we chew food, always mention that “chewing breaks food into smaller pieces to increase surface area for digestive juices to act on.”
